L.T.A. 18 & Under Junior County Cup – Part 2

Channel Islands review

The Channel Islands Under18 boys’ tennis team gained promotion in the L.T.A. 18 & Under Junior County Cup for only the second time.

Their campaign got off to a good start with an 8-1 victory over Northamptonshire on Friday at Les Ormes in Jersey and their 6-3 win over the South of Scotland on Saturday
meant Sunday’s match, against Gloucestershire, transformed in to a promotion play-off - which they won 5-4.

Coach Andrew Evans said “It’s unbelievable, they’ve played so well as a team and we really deserved to go up. They had to fight for it as there were many tight situations
but they got themselves out of it where previously they might have folded - it’s a great feeling to win and they did it together, it’s fantastic.”

Charlie Cohen, Scott Clayton and James Faudemer each won all three of their singles matches and Cohen and Faudemer combined to win all their doubles too.
Clayton played with Guernsey ’s Nick Thibeault, who in the singles had some tough matches against higher rated players at No. 1, and they had two doubles wins
as did James Connelly and Jordan Roberts. They are now promoted from Group 6 to Division 5 where they will meet Berkshire on the opening day
They will also meet West of Scotland and relegated Shropshire over the rest of the weekend.

“We will lose Jordan Roberts and James Connelly next year because of their age and playing in Group 5 is going to be another challenge to see if we can
consolidate our position but it’s a good challenge” added Evans.

Channel Islands L.T.A. officer, Hugh Raymond, “It’s incredible, the boys were quietly confident but to win on the last day was great. The atmosphere was incredible;
I’ve never seen so many people up here for this event. It’s another great boost for Channel Islands tennis and great to show what you can achieve - it’s a real positive.”

The girls’ team, with a weakened side due to holidays, didn’t fare as well but their 5-4 victory over the South of Scotland on the opening day ensured they finished in third place
with Suffolk winning the promotion spot due to a 5-4 win over Northamptonshire on Friday.

On Friday there were wins for Katie Gouyette, Sarah Jones, Natasha De Freitas and Eleanor Ross before Gouyette and Jones combined to win their doubles encounter.
Against Northamptonshire they struggled, losing 0-9, and yesterday they lost 1-8 to Suffolk - Gouyette and Jones again playing well together in the doubles to pick up the one result.

“I’m happy for the girls that they won one match, I just wish we had the same commitment from everyone to play as we had a number missing for this competition.
Nevertheless it was a good chance for the younger girls to get some match practice but the older girls were under more pressure and after they lost on Saturday
they didn’t have anything to play for on the last day.” said Evans

They remain in Group 6B where they will open up with a difficult match against relegated East of Scotland in 2009.
Gloucestershire and the Isle of Man will be their other opponents next February.

U16 British National Championships 2007

Heather Watson

Watson title paves way to tennis glory
by Aaron Scoones

THE top man in British tennis called Heather Watson an ‘outstanding prospect’ as the Guernsey star became the national under-16 singles champion.
Lawn Tennis Association chief executive Roger Draper was at the West Hants Tennis Club in Bournemouth, where 15-year-old Heather yesterday defeated top seed Laura Slater for the crown.
The Guernsey girl won the first set 6-1, before losing the second to her Surrey opponent 1-6.
But the Sarnian bounced back to take the decider 6-1. She was presented with the trophy by the former British number one Greg Rusedski.
Mr Draper said that parts of the thrilling match were the best he had seen for many years.
Past winners of the trophy – the Cochrane Plate – include Sue Barker in 1971 and Annabel Croft in the mid-80s and the victory follows Heather’s tremendous performance when the former Ladies’ College student reached the semi-finals of the under-18 singles.
‘Heather Watson has had an outstanding few weeks,’ said Mr Draper.
‘She was unlucky not to win last week’s under-18s. She’s played some great tennis and beaten some strong opposition.
‘Laura Slater is a great player. Particularly that first set was some of the best girls’ tennis we’ve seen here in probably a long time. I think Heather’s an outstanding prospect.’
Mr Draper is not one to mince his words. The former Sport England boss was brought into the LTA early last year to shake up an organisation that was in the doldrums.
He started by sacking performance director David Felgate and Britain’s Davis Cup captain Jeremy Bates. He was also behind bringing in Brad Gilbert to coach the country’s number one, Andy Murray, who has made great strides under the American.
Mr Draper was typically forthright in saying that Heather was approaching a crucial period as to whether she would make it as a professional player.
‘It’s a question of now taking it on to the next level,’ he said.
‘The next few years are going to be critical and it will be interesting to see how she copes with stepping up into the senior international arena.’
Mr Draper did not consider it surprising that Guernsey, with a population of just over 60,000, had produced a national tennis champion.
He pointed to the island’s rich squash heritage that saw Martine Le Moignan and Lisa Opie both in the world top three in the sport.
‘It’s not really 'surprising' if you’ve got the players and you’ve got good coaching programmes,’ he said,
‘It would be nice to think that Heather Watson could emulate Martine Le Moignan and Lisa Opie and put Guernsey on the map of international tennis.’
