Australian Open Juniors - Heather Watson

Heather began 2009 ranked no 13 in the world ITF ( International Tennis Federation) for under 18’s.

Having needed a wild card entry to Junior Wimbledon in 2008, and losing a close 3 set amatch in the first round, and having to win 2 rounds of qualifying to get into the US junior Open where after winning one round she lost to the no 1 seed N Lertcheewakarn 4/6, 4/6. Heather’s improvement up the rankings had been so rapid that she was seeded 9 for the OZ open junior event, where she breezed through the first 2 rounds to meet Japan’s M Innoue again ( second time in a week) this time in the extreme heat in the middle of the day. Somehow Heather overcame the heat to win 7/6, 4/6, 6/4. the final set was played when all other matches had been stopped, and the roof closed for Serena Williams match, Father Ian criticised the wisdom of allowing this match to continue when speaking on the radio. With less than 24 hours to recover she was back on court facing K Pervak, (ranked 154 in Women’s tennis) and put up a brave fight losing 3/6, 5/7.
Although seeded for the doubles it was probably a blessing that they lost in the first round. Laura Robson and partner gave a walkover when the heat became a problem. Laura went through to the final where she also lost to K Pervak
Laura has been playing some Women’s tennis since winning junior Wimbledon and has already risen to 514 in the rankings. Heather is due to make her debut in Women’s tennis in 2 events in Florida soon, and her 3rd event will be in Jersey in March.

Interview with Heather about the record heat endured on court - 28th January

"I think because we had started our match we had to finish it. I guess it was my fault for allowing the match to go on so long! It was just so hot. I’d have a cold drink and leave it by my chair at the change of ends and by the time I’d come back to it the water was boiling. Thank goodness I came out on top. I’ve never played in such high temperatures. Straight after the match I stretched, I cooled off in the shower, and then went to an ice bath ( in for 11/2 mins then out for a bit then in again total 10 mins) and then I had a massage and that made me feel ten times better. Even just in the second set I felt very dizzy and at one point I could see black infront of my eyes. I just had to tough it out. I was never going to give up because I really wanted to win that match. My feet were so hot. They were starting to hurt a bit. Thank goodness for that ten minute heat rule, because it gave me a chance to cool off. I drank lots and went in and out of a cold shower. Winning this match taught me that I can fight to the end. It helps to know that. It feels great that I gave it everything and I came out on top. It’s fun to have Laura there too, we get along really well and we are trying the best we can to be top in the world and push each other on. She did really great today as well, and hopefully we can keep going."

The Independent
Watson refuses to melt in Melbourne’s 42C heat. Guernsey teenager keeps her cool to join Robson in junior girls’ QF. The match had lasted two hours and thirty five minutes and when it finished just after 2.30 pm it was the only match still being played under the ferocious Melbourne sun. The discomfort Watson was feeling was evident. She lost her co-ordination, leaned on her racket for support between points and had to drag herself to her seat at changeovers. Success this week has been a reward for the sacrifices the Watsons have made. Heather now receives support from the LTA but until last year, when she received her first sponsorship from the Guernsey based bookmakers Sportinbet, the family could not send her to many tournaments. "In Guernsey, we seem to have the most expensive little bit of ocean to cross, judging by the lost of ferries and planes," her mother said. "We have 3 older children and have paid for them to go to school and on to university, but that’s been nothing to what we’ve had to spend on Heather. It cost $48.000 a year at the academy in Florida and $15,000 at the school she attends there- and that’s just for basics. I remember when Tim Henman visited our club in Guernsey when she was eight. Heather was one of the ballboys. He asked if any of them wanted to play a point witrh him and Heather put her hand up. They played a rally and he hit what he thought was a nice little winning drop shot. Heather ran in and hit a winner off it. Ever since then she has wanted to play every day. She’s very competitive and she settled in very quickly at the academy (she is in her 5th year there) She roomed with six other girls. It’s not like a hotel there, more like an army barracks. The kids go to school, play tennis and train, eat and sleep, but there is not much time for anything else. You’re there for your sport. Heather is very, very competitive and it suited her."

Hot stuff Heather beats the weather, The Daily Mail
Serena Williams had been called off court for her own good, a wheelchair competitor was being taken away in distress and one of the last two players standing was a 16year old from the Channel Islands. …Watson was up against it in facing third seed Pervak this morning but to have reached the quarterfinals of only her third Junior Grand Slam was some achievement. Island life is not conducive to making it as a tennis player so, at the age of 12, the ruinously expensive decision was taken to send her, alone, to the Bollettieri Academy in Florida. Her mother Michelle, who is from Papua New Guinea, and father Ian, a Mancunian who runs Guernsey Electricity board, reckoned there was no other way if they were serious about it. "I warned her that it would be tough but Heather is strong and competitive and there was no homesickness, she settled in quickly", said Michelle, of a place where the package comes at $63,000 per year. "I don’t even want to think of what we have spent but we are very proud. We used to take her to tournaments but we seem to have the most expensive little bit of ocean to cross to go anywhere if you look at the flights and ferries. The burden has been eased by support from sponsors Sportingbet and the LTA". Watson will go out on tour once she has graduated from high school. She does not have the potential for greatness that Robson might have, but the determination is not lacking.

The Dream is Over, Guernsey Evening Press
Heather Watson’s Australian Open campaign evaporated in the blistering heat overnight. The Guernsey teenager, seeded 9, went down in straight sets 3/6,5/7 to Russian no 3 Pervak in their quarterfinal showdown, which lasted six minutes short of two hours. Watson was philosophical in defeat and admitted the horrific oncourt temperatures- approaching 50 degrees Celcius 122 F in successive days-took their toll on her young body. "I was quite exhausted after playing in the same conditions yeaterday and I made too many errors today. I felt drained because I have never played in extreme heat like this before and todays match probably came too soon for me. I drank lots of water yeaterday but I woke up in the middle of the night feeling dehydrated, so I drank lots more water to help me get back to sleep. It would have been very tough on both of us if it had been a 3 setter because it was just so hot. The wind was making it hard to breathe and ny eyes were hurting in the sun. I’m happy I got to the QF but am disappointed I couldn’t make it to the semis or final.I’m going to keep working hard on my game and make sure I keep improving."

L.T.A. 18 & Under Junior County Cup – Part 2

Channel Islands review

The Channel Islands Under18 boys’ tennis team gained promotion in the L.T.A. 18 & Under Junior County Cup for only the second time.

Their campaign got off to a good start with an 8-1 victory over Northamptonshire on Friday at Les Ormes in Jersey and their 6-3 win over the South of Scotland on Saturday
meant Sunday’s match, against Gloucestershire, transformed in to a promotion play-off - which they won 5-4.

Coach Andrew Evans said “It’s unbelievable, they’ve played so well as a team and we really deserved to go up. They had to fight for it as there were many tight situations
but they got themselves out of it where previously they might have folded - it’s a great feeling to win and they did it together, it’s fantastic.”

Charlie Cohen, Scott Clayton and James Faudemer each won all three of their singles matches and Cohen and Faudemer combined to win all their doubles too.
Clayton played with Guernsey ’s Nick Thibeault, who in the singles had some tough matches against higher rated players at No. 1, and they had two doubles wins
as did James Connelly and Jordan Roberts. They are now promoted from Group 6 to Division 5 where they will meet Berkshire on the opening day
They will also meet West of Scotland and relegated Shropshire over the rest of the weekend.

“We will lose Jordan Roberts and James Connelly next year because of their age and playing in Group 5 is going to be another challenge to see if we can
consolidate our position but it’s a good challenge” added Evans.

Channel Islands L.T.A. officer, Hugh Raymond, “It’s incredible, the boys were quietly confident but to win on the last day was great. The atmosphere was incredible;
I’ve never seen so many people up here for this event. It’s another great boost for Channel Islands tennis and great to show what you can achieve - it’s a real positive.”

The girls’ team, with a weakened side due to holidays, didn’t fare as well but their 5-4 victory over the South of Scotland on the opening day ensured they finished in third place
with Suffolk winning the promotion spot due to a 5-4 win over Northamptonshire on Friday.

On Friday there were wins for Katie Gouyette, Sarah Jones, Natasha De Freitas and Eleanor Ross before Gouyette and Jones combined to win their doubles encounter.
Against Northamptonshire they struggled, losing 0-9, and yesterday they lost 1-8 to Suffolk - Gouyette and Jones again playing well together in the doubles to pick up the one result.

“I’m happy for the girls that they won one match, I just wish we had the same commitment from everyone to play as we had a number missing for this competition.
Nevertheless it was a good chance for the younger girls to get some match practice but the older girls were under more pressure and after they lost on Saturday
they didn’t have anything to play for on the last day.” said Evans

They remain in Group 6B where they will open up with a difficult match against relegated East of Scotland in 2009.
Gloucestershire and the Isle of Man will be their other opponents next February.
